The Deadly Premise In Season 1, 456 deeply indebted individuals—including the struggling protagonist, Seong Gi-hun—are recruited for a mysterious tournament. The players are taken to a remote island to compete in six traditional Korean children’s games for a life-changing prize of 45.6 billion won. The horrifying catch is revealed during the first game, "Red Light, Green Light": anyone who fails or moves is immediately shot and killed.
Alliances and Betrayals
Stripped of their outside identities and assigned numbers, the participants must navigate extreme physical and psychological terror. Gi-hun forms a fragile team with his disgraced childhood friend Sang-woo, North Korean defector Sae-byeok, kind-hearted immigrant Ali, and an elderly man named Il-nam. As the games progress—including the delicate Dalgona challenge and a devastating game of Marbles—survival demands ruthless betrayal, forcing friends to sacrifice one another to stay alive.
The Infiltration
Simultaneously, a police officer named Hwang Jun-ho sneaks into the facility disguised as a guard to search for his missing brother. Through his investigation, the dark reality of the games is exposed: the entire bloodbath is orchestrated by a masked figure known as the "Front Man" for the perverse entertainment of ultra-wealthy, masked "VIPs" who gamble on the players' lives.
The Climax and Tragic Victory
The tournament concludes with a brutal knife fight in the titular "Squid Game" between Gi-hun and Sang-woo. Unable to kill his old friend, Gi-hun offers to end the games so they can both survive in poverty. Instead, a defeated Sang-woo takes his own life to ensure Gi-hun wins the prize money. Gi-hun returns home a billionaire, only to find that his mother has died alone while he was away.
The Final Twist
After a year of paralyzing grief and refusing to touch his prize money, Gi-hun receives one final invitation. He discovers that Il-nam, the old man he befriended, secretly created the games out of sheer boredom. Following Il-nam's death, a newly determined Gi-hun dyes his hair red and heads to the airport to visit his daughter. However, after spotting a recruiter, he turns around, abandoning his flight to hunt down the organization and destroy the games forever.
