In September 2026, McDonald’s launched a massive, multi-market Asian campaign spearheaded by McDonald featuring BIGBANG’s G-Dragon as the lead ambassador. The collaboration represents a fusion of global fast food, Korean culinary staples, K-pop influence, and high-end streetwear, rolling out across 13 distinct Asian markets.

Campaign Origins and Cultural Synergy

The initiative was entirely developed and planned by McDonald’s headquarters in Seoul, making it a distinct export of Korean cultural influence to the rest of the continent. By selecting Kwon Ji-yong (G-Dragon)—a globally recognized musician, Chanel ambassador, and fashion icon—McDonald’s aims to replicate and evolve the success of previous artist collaborations, such as the 2021 BTS Meal.

Unlike previous celebrity meals that largely repackaged existing menu items with custom branding, this campaign introduces entirely new flavor profiles developed specifically for the region. The partnership merges the massive footprint of McDonald's with G-Dragon’s personal fashion label, PEACEMINUSONE, turning a fast-food rollout into a highly anticipated streetwear and culinary event.

The Culinary Centerpiece: Gochujang Butter

The unifying culinary element across all 13 participating markets is a custom-developed Gochujang butter sauce. Gochujang, a traditional Korean fermented red chili paste, provides a balance of spicy, savory, and slightly sweet flavor profiles. McDonald's Korea formulated this sauce to act as the primary motif for the entire regional campaign, with several international markets committing to keeping the Korean word "gochujang" explicitly in the menu names.

In South Korea, where the rollout begins on September 17, 2026, the menu features three primary offerings:

1. McCrispy Gochujang Butter:

A crispy whole-muscle chicken patty topped with Colby Jack cheese and the signature gochujang butter sauce.

2. McSpicy Gochujang Butter:

A spicier chicken patty variant, also layered with Colby Jack cheese and the gochujang butter sauce.

3. Gochujang Butter Dipping Sauce:

The sauce is available a la carte for dipping fries and McNuggets.

The PEACEMINUSONE Merchandise Drop

Beyond the food, the campaign's most anticipated component is the limited-edition merchandise co-designed with PEACEMINUSONE. Dropping later in September following the initial food launch, the collection integrates McDonald's branding with G-Dragon’s signature aesthetic, heavily featuring PEACEMINUSONE's iconic daisy motif.

While exact inventories will vary by market, the collection is expected to include:

  1. Plush keychains and collectible figurines.

  2. Apparel and accessories, including tote bags and visors.

  3. Jewelry and hardware, such as metal pins, earrings, and bracelets.

The merchandise strategy is designed to drive immense foot traffic, as collectors and fans traditionally clear out limited-edition K-pop and streetwear collaborations rapidly upon release.

Regional Rollout Strategy

The campaign follows a staggered release schedule starting in South Korea on September 17, 2026. From there, it expands sequentially to 12 other Asian markets, including China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Singapore. Notably, Japan is excluded from the current 13-market lineup.

In markets like Singapore, the rollout is strategically timed for October 1, 2026, explicitly aligning with BIGBANG's scheduled October concerts in the country. This scheduling allows fans traveling for the music event to seamlessly participate in the fast-food promotion, maximizing the campaign's visibility and commercial impact.

By placing a traditional Korean ingredient at the forefront of a multinational menu and pairing it with one of the most recognizable figures in Asian pop culture, McDonald's Korea has engineered a campaign that pushes beyond standard fast-food marketing. It effectively utilizes a fast-food drive-thru as a distribution network for Korean culinary identity and exclusive streetwear.
